Horse insurance FAQs
What is equine insurance?
Simply put, it’s insurance for horses. Many horse and pony owners get it to cover things like mortality or loss if their horse is stolen or goes missing. But that’s not all – it can also cover vet bills if your horse gets sick or injured, or even damage caused by your horse. You can add extras too, like personal accident cover, protection for your saddlery and tack, or even horse-drawn trailers.
Can you insure a racehorse?
Unfortunately, we can’t cover racehorses. Since racehorses are considered bloodstock, we’re only able to insure livestock.
How much does horse insurance cost?
The cost of horse insurance depends on factors such as the horse’s age, breed, health and the type of cover you choose. Policies with higher veterinary fee limits or additional extras will generally cost more. Getting a quote from Petcover is the best way to find out what you’ll pay. Our policies start from $17.09 a month.*
So, what exactly does horse insurance cover?
Generally, it’s there to help if the worst happens – like if your horse passes away, gets stolen, or goes missing. But you can also customise your policy to include extras for an additional cost. Think vet bills for illness or injury, cover for your saddles and tack, or even insurance for horse-drawn trailers. You can also add personal accident cover or third-party liability. It really just depends on the specific policy you choose and what you need for your peace of mind.
Does horse insurance cover vet bills?
Yes, depending on the level of cover you choose. Petcover policies can pay towards eligible veterinary fees for illness or injury, up to the limits of your plan with an optional add-on. Our Superior add-on can cover up to $10,000 in vet fees, while the Economy add-on covers up to $7,000.
Do horse trailers need insurance?
While horse float or trailer insurance isn’t a legal requirement, it’s highly recommended. Specialist insurance can protect your float or trailer against theft, accidental damage, or fire. Petcover also offers discounts on horse float insurance when you hold a horse insurance policy.
Are sports or activities included in horse insurance?
Your policy can cover you for a wide range of equine sports and activities, including:
- Hacking and pleasure riding
- Showing and groundwork
- Show jumping and dressage
- Cross country
- Eventing
- Endurance riding
- Western sports like barrel racing, reining, and cutting
- Competitive carriage driving
- Advanced and three-day eventing
- Polo and polocrosse
- Team chasing
- Point-to-point racing
