A concise guide to the condition’s pattern, detection, management and urgency.
This snapshot is a general guide, not a diagnosis or treatment plan. New, severe or worsening signs require veterinary assessment.
A hoof crack is a split in the hoof wall that may begin at the ground surface and extend upward, or start at the coronary band and grow downward. Cracks are named by location—typically toe, quarter, heel or bar—and by whether they are superficial, full thickness, stable or moving under load. The name “sand crack” does not identify its cause.
Dry brittle horn, excessive moisture change, long intervals between trims, wall flare, mediolateral imbalance, sheared heels, direct coronary-band injury and repeated concussion can contribute. A superficial stable line may be cosmetic. A deep crack that opens with each step pinches sensitive laminae, bleeds, admits bacteria and causes lameness. Coronary-band damage can permanently alter horn production and create a recurrent defect.
The crack itself is often the visible result of abnormal mechanics rather than the whole disease. Quarter cracks commonly reflect uneven heel loading; simply filling the gap without unloading movement traps contamination and fails. Toe cracks can accompany long-toe leverage, club foot or chronic laminitis. A draining crack may communicate with an abscess or infected deeper tissue.
Prognosis depends on restoring stability and healthy wall growth. Because hoof wall grows from the coronary band, a full-length defect takes many months to replace even after the cause is corrected. Persistent pain, proud flesh at the coronary margin, discharge or distortion warrants radiographs and a coordinated veterinary-farrier plan rather than repeated cosmetic patching.
Cracks are described by location and direction—sand cracks descend from the coronary band, grass cracks rise from the ground, and quarter or toe cracks experience different forces. Movement of the crack margins causes pain and prevents horn repair. A coronary-band injury can leave a permanent defect, whereas many ground-origin cracks grow out once leverage is corrected.
The clean dry hoof is examined weight bearing and lifted. The farrier watches whether crack edges move, overlap or widen under load and maps tenderness, heat and digital pulse. Hoof balance, heel height, wall flare, shoe fit and the opposite foot are compared. The coronary band is inspected for old scar or active injury.
Hoof testers and diagnostic nerve blocks help localise pain. Radiographs evaluate pedal-bone alignment, gas, chronic laminitis, keratoma or infection when the crack is deep, recurrent or draining. A probe is used cautiously; aggressive exploration can create sensitive-tissue damage. Culture is reserved for confirmed infection and is interpreted after debridement.
Serial photographs with a scale show whether a crack is growing out from the coronary band. A horizontal mark in horn must not penetrate sensitive tissue. Any sudden lameness, bleeding, unstable wall segment or purulent discharge requires prompt assessment. A defect that repeatedly returns at the same coronary site suggests permanent germinal injury or a deeper cause and should not be labelled routine dryness.
Treatment first changes hoof mechanics. Balanced trimming removes flare and redistributes load; shoeing or a boot supports the affected quarter or heel and eases breakover. A groove or “stop” is used selectively and must not weaken healthy wall. Unstable full-thickness cracks can be laced, wired, plated or repaired with composite only after infection and necrotic horn are removed and the area is dry.
Abscesses are drained, infected tissue debrided and coronary-band wounds managed to preserve horn growth. Sealing bacteria beneath acrylic worsens disease. Painful horses reduce work until the crack no longer moves and healthy wall provides support. Farrier intervals are shortened so imbalance does not recur while the defect grows out.
Environmental management avoids prolonged saturation followed by extreme drying, but routine oils cannot correct structural leverage. A balanced diet supplies adequate protein, biotin, zinc and copper; megadoses do not speed growth beyond normal and take months to affect new horn. Prognosis is good for mechanically caused cracks with an intact coronary band. Permanent coronary scarring or chronic laminitis can require lifelong stabilising farriery and may limit performance.
Stabilisation spans sound horn on both sides and is adjusted as the defect grows downward.
