A concise guide to the condition’s pattern, detection, management and urgency.
This snapshot is a general guide, not a diagnosis or treatment plan. New, severe or worsening signs require veterinary assessment.
Equine influenza is a highly contagious viral respiratory disease caused by equine influenza A virus. It spreads rapidly through droplets, close contact and contaminated hands, clothing, tack, vehicles and shared equipment. The incubation period is short, commonly one to three days, so multiple horses can become ill in quick succession before the first case is confirmed.
Typical signs begin abruptly with high fever, depression, poor appetite and a harsh dry cough. Clear nasal discharge can later become thicker, particularly when secondary bacterial infection develops. Young and incompletely vaccinated horses often show more severe illness. Influenza damages the ciliated lining of the trachea and bronchi, impairing clearance of mucus and microorganisms for several weeks even after fever settles.
Most uncomplicated cases recover, but cough and reduced stamina may persist. Premature exercise increases the risk of prolonged airway inflammation, bacterial pneumonia, pleuropneumonia and occasionally heart or muscle complications. Influenza can look similar to EHV-1, EHV-4 and other respiratory infections; speed of spread and strong cough are suggestive but not diagnostic.
Vaccination reduces clinical severity and transmission risk but does not prevent every infection, especially when boosters are overdue or circulating strains differ. Population immunity, horse movement and early isolation largely determine outbreak size. The disease is rarely fatal in otherwise healthy adults, yet its welfare and industry effects are substantial because exposed groups require movement restrictions and adequate recovery time.
The virus spreads rapidly by respiratory droplets, direct contact and contaminated hands, clothing, tack or transport. Fever often precedes the harsh dry cough, allowing apparently normal horses to travel while incubating disease. Most uncomplicated cases recover, but premature return to work can prolong airway inflammation, and secondary bacterial pneumonia is a greater threat in foals or poorly rested adults.
During an outbreak, temperatures should be recorded at least twice daily for exposed horses because fever may precede cough and shedding. Suspect horses are separated immediately, and movements, contacts, vaccination dates and the order of onset are documented. New arrivals should be isolated according to the property’s biosecurity plan.
RT-PCR on a properly collected nasopharyngeal swab early in illness is the primary diagnostic test. Sampling is most useful soon after fever and respiratory signs begin. Viral isolation is slower, while paired blood samples collected weeks apart can demonstrate a rising antibody response retrospectively. A negative late or poorly collected swab does not completely exclude influenza.
Veterinary examination assesses breathing, hydration and signs of secondary pneumonia. Persistent fever, increased respiratory effort, painful cough, abnormal lung sounds or mucopurulent discharge justifies further blood testing and thoracic imaging. Release from isolation follows veterinary and jurisdictional guidance based on the final new case and clinical recovery, not a single negative result. Vaccination records help assess risk but cannot be used to dismiss compatible disease.
Uncomplicated influenza is treated with rest, good nursing and biosecurity. Palatable feed, fresh water, ventilation and a low-dust environment support damaged airways. Anti-inflammatory medication may control high fever and discomfort under veterinary direction. Antimicrobials do not treat the virus and are reserved for evidence of secondary bacterial pneumonia or another bacterial complication.
Exercise restriction is essential while respiratory epithelium regenerates. A commonly used minimum is one week of rest for each day of fever, with at least several weeks before strenuous work; severe cases need longer. Cough disappearance alone is not a sufficient return-to-training test. Work resumes gradually while temperature, breathing and recovery are monitored.
Affected and exposed groups require separation, dedicated equipment and ordered care from clean to sick horses. Organic material is removed before disinfection, and personnel avoid carrying contamination between properties. Vaccination programmes are reviewed after the acute outbreak, but vaccination is preventive rather than curative. Horses with pneumonia require targeted antimicrobials, fluids and potentially hospital care. Prognosis is excellent for uncomplicated disease given adequate rest, but early work and secondary bacterial infection can extend recovery for months.
