A concise guide to the condition’s pattern, detection, management and urgency.
This snapshot is a general guide, not a diagnosis or treatment plan. New, severe or worsening signs require veterinary assessment.
Developmental orthopaedic disease, or DOD, is an umbrella term for musculoskeletal disorders arising during growth. It includes osteochondrosis, physitis, angular limb deformities, flexural deformities and incomplete ossification of cuboidal bones. These conditions involve different tissues and mechanisms; DOD is not a single diagnosis that receives one standard treatment.
Signs vary from joint or growth-plate swelling and mild stiffness to obvious limb deviation, knuckling, club foot, lameness or inability of a newborn foal to stand normally. Rapid change matters because growth plates close on a schedule and a deformity that is correctable early may become permanent. Premature foals can have incompletely ossified carpal or tarsal bones that collapse if allowed unrestricted weight bearing.
Genetics, intrauterine position, prematurity, trauma, excessive energy intake, uneven rapid growth and mineral imbalance can contribute. Excess dietary protein alone is not proven to cause DOD. Both overfeeding and crude feed restriction can be harmful: the goal is steady appropriate growth on a correctly balanced ration, not making a foal thin or adding multiple unmeasured supplements.
Prognosis depends on the exact lesion, age and timing. Mild neonatal laxity may resolve with controlled movement, while severe deviation, growth-plate bridging or joint-surface damage can impair lifelong soundness. Because several problems can occur together, naming the specific bones, joints, tendons and growth plates is essential before making nutrition, farriery or surgical decisions.
This umbrella term includes physitis, angular and flexural deformities, osteochondrosis, subchondral cysts and some juvenile bone abnormalities. Rapid growth, uneven loading, genetics, trauma and nutritional imbalance interact differently for each lesion. Treating every enlarged growth plate with severe feed restriction can impair development; the diagnosis and remaining growth potential determine urgency.
Early recognition matters because growth plates offer a limited and site-specific window for guided correction.
Foals should be observed standing and walking soon after birth and then assessed regularly through periods of rapid growth. Front, side and rear photographs on level ground, body weight, growth rate and body-condition records make gradual deviation easier to recognise. New joint swelling, toe walking, knuckling or unequal hoof wear warrants prompt veterinary review.
Examination determines whether a deformity is angular, rotational, flexural or caused by pain. Radiographs identify the site and degree of deviation, growth-plate disease, incomplete cuboidal ossification and concurrent osteochondrosis. Ultrasound evaluates tendons and cartilage in selected cases. Premature or dysmature foals often need carpal and tarsal radiographs before unrestricted turnout.
Dietary evaluation covers mare’s gestation ration, milk, creep feed, pasture, hay and every mineral supplement. Growth and mineral targets are calculated for age and expected mature size. Serial radiographs are time-sensitive because treatment opportunities narrow as growth plates close. Group outbreaks prompt forage and ration analysis, but an individual deformity should not be attributed to nutrition without examining conformation, pain and developmental history.
Treatment is lesion-specific. Mild angular deformities can improve with controlled exercise, frequent balanced trimming and correction of a nutritional excess or deficiency. More severe deviation may require periosteal stimulation or temporary growth-plate bridging performed while enough growth remains. Flexural deformities receive pain control, careful farriery, controlled movement, splints or casts, medication in selected newborns and surgical release of an accessory ligament when conservative treatment fails.
Premature foals with incomplete cuboidal ossification need restricted weight bearing, supportive splints or casts and serial imaging to prevent crushing. Physitis management reduces excessive energy intake, maintains adequate protein and balanced minerals, controls body weight and treats underlying pain. Exercise is limited to safe footing rather than universal prolonged stall confinement.
The ration is reformulated from analysis; adding a single mineral without calculating calcium, phosphorus, copper, zinc and total intake can worsen balance. Hooves are reassessed frequently because growth is rapid. Surgical timing and follow-up are critical, and overcorrection is possible. Prognosis is best with early, accurately localised intervention. Established joint incongruity, severe collapse or delayed treatment after growth-plate closure can leave permanent lameness despite cosmetic improvement.
