A concise guide to the condition’s pattern, detection, management and urgency.
This snapshot is a general guide, not a diagnosis or treatment plan. New, severe or worsening signs require veterinary assessment.
Seborrhoea describes abnormal scaling and altered production of skin surface lipids. In cats it is usually a sign of another problem rather than a primary inherited disease. The coat may become greasy, flaky, dull or malodorous, and dandruff may be obvious along the back or near the tail base.
Many different disorders can produce seborrhoeic change. Obesity and arthritis can prevent a cat from grooming effectively. Parasites, dermatophytosis, bacterial or yeast infection and allergy can inflame the skin. Endocrine, nutritional or systemic illness can alter coat quality, particularly when the cat has lost weight or is chronically unwell.
The pattern matters. A greasy tail-base area in an entire male may reflect excess sebaceous activity, while widespread scaling in a cat that has stopped grooming suggests a different process. Large adherent scales, hair loss, redness or itch indicate that simple dry skin is unlikely to be the whole explanation.
Repeated bathing without diagnosis can make some cats worse by drying or irritating the skin. Seborrhoea is best treated as a clinical sign that directs investigation. Once the primary problem is managed, coat quality often improves as normal grooming and skin turnover return.
Cats are normally meticulous groomers, so a new greasy or flaky coat can be an early sign that something has changed physically. The coat may reveal obesity, dental pain, arthritis or systemic illness before the owner recognises the underlying problem directly. That makes seborrhoeic change a useful clinical clue rather than merely a grooming concern.
A coat that appears dry may still have an infectious or parasitic cause. Early detection means recognising a coat change as potentially medical rather than simply cosmetic. Recurrence is expected if the underlying problem returns.
Persistent dandruff, greasiness, odour or a sudden decline in coat quality should be assessed when ordinary grooming does not correct it. Owners should also notice whether the cat is physically able to reach the affected area, because obesity or joint pain commonly reduces grooming.
The veterinarian examines the distribution of scale and looks for redness, crusting, hair breakage and parasites. Cytology can identify bacteria or yeast. Flea combing, skin scrapings and fungal testing are selected according to risk and lesion pattern.
Body weight and mobility should be assessed, especially in older cats. Blood and urine testing may be recommended if seborrhoea accompanies weight loss, excessive thirst, poor appetite or other evidence of systemic illness.
There is no general screening test for seborrhoea. A cat that suddenly stops grooming, develops mats or becomes greasy over areas it previously maintained should be examined for pain and illness as well as skin disease.
Diagnosis therefore focuses on finding the cause. The veterinarian assesses body condition, mobility and grooming, then uses skin cytology, parasite tests, fungal testing or other investigations according to the lesions. Blood tests may be appropriate when systemic disease is suspected.
Treatment is aimed at the cause. Parasites are eliminated with an appropriate product, fungal or bacterial infection is treated when identified, and allergy management is introduced where relevant. Cats that cannot groom because of arthritis or obesity need pain control, environmental assistance and gradual weight management.
Topical shampoos, wipes or moisturising products may help remove scale and excess oil, but only cat-safe products should be used. Bathing frequency is chosen carefully because excessive washing can damage the skin barrier and increase dryness. Long-haired cats may need gentle clipping or professional grooming when mats have formed.
Nutritionally complete food and adequate calorie intake are important for normal skin and coat. Supplements should not be added indiscriminately because excessive vitamins or fatty acids can create other problems.
Improvement can take several weeks because the coat must regrow and normal skin turnover needs time to stabilise. Persistent seborrhoea despite appropriate treatment should prompt re-evaluation of the diagnosis rather than simply escalating shampoos or grooming.
Professional grooming can support treatment in long-haired or painful cats, but it should be coordinated with medical care so grooming does not conceal ongoing skin inflammation.
