A concise guide to the condition’s pattern, detection, management and urgency.
This snapshot is a general guide, not a diagnosis or treatment plan. New, severe or worsening signs require veterinary assessment.
Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums, most often seen as redness, swelling and tenderness along the edge of the teeth. Plaque is a common trigger because bacteria and their by-products stimulate an inflammatory response in the gum tissue. Mild plaque-associated gingivitis can occur without deeper periodontal damage and may be reversible when the plaque burden is reduced.
Not every case is simple plaque-related disease. Marked, persistent or unusually widespread gingivitis can accompany tooth resorption, periodontal disease, chronic gingivostomatitis, viral infection or immune-mediated inflammation. Young cats can also develop pronounced gingivitis around the time adult teeth erupt. The pattern, severity and persistence of the inflammation therefore matter when deciding whether more investigation is needed.
Cats with gingivitis may have bad breath, red gums, bleeding after chewing, drooling or reluctance to crunch hard food. Some paw at the mouth or become irritable when the face is handled. Others show no obvious signs and continue to eat despite a painful mouth. Because cats often hide oral discomfort, reduced grooming, weight loss or a gradual preference for softer food can be important clues.
Gingivitis describes the inflammation rather than one single cause. The outlook is generally good for mild plaque-related disease, but persistent gingivitis should not simply be treated repeatedly with antibiotics or ignored. Finding and addressing the underlying dental or inflammatory problem is more important than temporarily reducing redness.
The distinction between simple gingivitis and more advanced oral disease is important because the former can resolve without permanent tissue loss, while periodontitis and resorptive disease require more definitive treatment. Persistent redness is therefore a reason to look deeper rather than simply accepting it as normal for the cat.
Comparing the mouth with previous visits helps distinguish transient mild inflammation from a persistent pattern.
Routine oral examinations are the main way to identify gingivitis before it becomes severe. During health checks, the gum margins should be assessed for redness, swelling, bleeding, recession and pain, and the amount of plaque and calculus should be recorded.
At home, changes that warrant assessment include worsening breath, red or bleeding gums, drooling, food being dropped, chewing on one side, reluctance to eat hard food or reduced grooming. Kittens with intense gum inflammation around erupting teeth should also be examined if the redness is extensive or does not settle as the mouth matures.
If inflammation is marked, recurrent or disproportionate to the amount of visible plaque, the veterinarian may recommend a full dental examination under anaesthesia with dental radiographs. This allows hidden tooth resorption, periodontal pockets, retained roots and other painful lesions to be identified.
There is no useful blood test that screens healthy cats specifically for gingivitis. Early detection depends on regular inspection of the mouth and prompt investigation of persistent inflammation rather than waiting for appetite loss or obvious dental pain.
An awake oral examination can identify visible inflammation, but a complete dental assessment may require anaesthesia, especially when the gums remain inflamed despite basic care. Dental radiographs help identify disease below the gumline, including tooth resorption and periodontal bone loss.
Management depends on the cause and severity of the gingivitis. Mild plaque-related inflammation is treated by removing plaque and calculus and establishing effective home oral care. A professional dental clean under general anaesthesia may be needed when deposits are established or the cat will not tolerate adequate cleaning while awake.
Daily tooth brushing with a cat-safe toothpaste is the most effective way to reduce new plaque when practical. Dental diets and evidence-based oral-care products can supplement brushing. They are less useful if painful dental disease is already present, because diseased teeth need to be identified and treated first.
Persistent gingivitis requires a search for contributing problems. Tooth resorption, periodontitis, retained roots and chronic gingivostomatitis may change treatment substantially and can require extraction of affected teeth. Pain relief is appropriate when the mouth is sore. Antibiotics are reserved for situations where bacterial infection is clinically relevant; repeated courses do not correct plaque, resorptive lesions or immune-driven inflammation.
Follow-up is important because recurrence is common when plaque rapidly reforms or another oral disorder is present. The goal is a comfortable mouth with minimal inflammation, normal eating and grooming, and treatment directed at the underlying cause rather than repeated short-term suppression of redness.
