A concise guide to the condition’s pattern, detection, management and urgency.
This snapshot is a general guide, not a diagnosis or treatment plan. New, severe or worsening signs require veterinary assessment.
Ear mites are tiny parasites, most commonly Otodectes cynotis, that live on the surface of the ear canal and feed on debris and skin secretions. They are highly contagious between cats and are especially common in kittens, recently adopted cats and animals from multi-pet environments.
Affected cats often shake the head, scratch the ears and develop dark, dry debris that can resemble coffee grounds. The ear canal may become red and irritated, and scratching can cause wounds around the ears or neck. Some cats carry mites with surprisingly mild signs while still spreading them to other animals.
Ear mites remain mainly within the ear canal but can occasionally be found on the skin around the head or body. The inflammation they create can allow secondary bacterial or yeast otitis to develop. A cat that remains painful after mites have been killed may therefore have another ear problem that also needs treatment.
Dark debris alone is not proof because yeast, bacteria, dried blood and other causes of otitis can look similar. Both ears should be assessed even when only one appears affected.
The condition is usually straightforward to treat with modern antiparasitic products, but every susceptible pet in close contact may need treatment to prevent reinfestation. Cleaning may help remove debris, although aggressive home cleaning can injure an inflamed ear. The key is to identify the parasite correctly and use a cat-safe product that kills the relevant life stages.
The degree of irritation varies with the individual cat’s response. A kitten with heavy debris may scratch constantly, while another carrying mites has little visible discomfort.
One apparently unaffected pet can maintain the cycle if only the most obviously itchy cat is treated. Environmental survival is limited compared with fleas, but shared bedding and close contact still matter.
Kittens and newly adopted cats should have their ears checked for excessive dark debris, redness and scratching. Head shaking, repeated ear scratching or wounds behind the ears should prompt examination even if the cat otherwise seems well.
A veterinarian can use an otoscope to inspect the ear canal and may see moving mites directly. A small sample of debris examined under a microscope can identify mites or eggs and also reveal yeast or bacteria that may require additional treatment.
Because ear mites are contagious, other cats and dogs in close contact should be considered during assessment.
There is no blood screening test for ear mites. Diagnosis is quick and local. Early detection prevents chronic inflammation, self-trauma and secondary infection. A very painful ear, head tilt or loss of balance warrants broader assessment because these signs can indicate deeper ear disease rather than uncomplicated mites alone.
Diagnosis is made by examining ear debris microscopically or directly visualising mites with an otoscope. This variation is why examination of contact animals matters even when only one pet is showing obvious ear disease.
Treatment uses an effective cat-safe acaricidal product, often a topical or systemic parasite medication that also controls other common parasites. The exact product and dosing schedule depend on age, weight and local availability. All susceptible in-contact pets may need treatment at the same time.
The ear canal may be cleaned to remove heavy debris, but cleaning should be gentle. Cotton buds inserted deeply can pack material farther into the canal or damage the eardrum. If the ear is extremely painful or packed with debris, professional cleaning may be safer.
Secondary bacterial or yeast infection is treated only when confirmed or strongly suspected from examination and cytology. Persistent inflammation after mite treatment should prompt rechecking rather than repeated parasite medication.
Most cats improve quickly once mites are eliminated. Itching can take a little longer to settle if the canal has been badly inflamed. Follow-up is useful when signs persist, in large multi-pet households or when the original infestation was heavy. Preventive parasite products that include ear-mite control can reduce recurrence in cats with repeated exposure risk.
Treatment should be repeated or continued for the full recommended interval so newly emerged mites are also controlled rather than stopping after the first improvement in debris.
