A concise guide to the condition’s pattern, detection, management and urgency.
This snapshot is a general guide, not a diagnosis or treatment plan. New, severe or worsening signs require veterinary assessment.
Bordetella bronchiseptica is a bacterium that can infect the respiratory tract of cats. It is most relevant in shelters, catteries, breeding facilities and other environments where many cats are housed closely. Healthy adult cats may develop mild upper respiratory signs, while young kittens or stressed and immunocompromised cats can occasionally develop more serious lower respiratory disease.
Signs can include sneezing, nasal discharge, fever, enlarged lymph nodes and coughing. Cough is more noteworthy with Bordetella than with many uncomplicated feline upper respiratory infections. In severe cases the infection can extend into the lungs and cause pneumonia, particularly in vulnerable kittens.
Transmission occurs through respiratory droplets and close contact. Dogs can also carry B. bronchiseptica, so mixed-species environments may be relevant. The organism can be part of a complex respiratory outbreak alongside herpesvirus, calicivirus or other pathogens rather than acting alone.
A positive result must be interpreted with clinical signs and sampling site because colonisation can occur.
Most uncomplicated infections have a favourable outlook. The major concern is recognising when disease has progressed beyond mild upper respiratory signs. A kitten with cough, fever, poor appetite and increased breathing effort requires more urgent evaluation for pneumonia than an adult cat with mild sneezing alone.
The infection is clinically distinct from simple viral sneezing when it produces cough or lower-airway disease. That distinction is especially important in young kittens, where progression to bronchopneumonia can occur quickly and where waiting for a routine respiratory illness to “run its course” may delay necessary treatment.
Sampling method matters; results from the upper airway may not perfectly reflect infection deeper in the lungs. Increased respiratory rate, abdominal breathing effort, lethargy and abnormal lung sounds raise the urgency. Recovery is usually good in otherwise healthy adults.
Bordetella should be considered when respiratory disease occurs in groups of cats, particularly when coughing is prominent or kittens are affected. Early veterinary assessment is important if fever, reduced appetite or lower respiratory signs accompany the upper respiratory illness.
PCR or bacterial culture can be used to identify the organism. Culture has the advantage of allowing antibiotic susceptibility testing, which is useful in persistent or severe disease.
Chest radiographs are appropriate when pneumonia is suspected. Blood tests may be used in systemically ill kittens to assess hydration and inflammatory changes.
Routine screening of healthy household cats is not generally necessary. In shelters or breeding facilities with repeated outbreaks, veterinary review of ventilation, population density, quarantine and vaccination strategy is more useful than indiscriminate testing. Cats with open-mouth breathing, cyanosis or severe effort require emergency care rather than waiting for laboratory confirmation.
Diagnosis is not based solely on symptoms because several infections look similar. PCR testing or bacterial culture from appropriate respiratory samples can support diagnosis, especially during outbreaks or when lower respiratory disease is present.
Mild disease may resolve with supportive care, but clinically significant Bordetella infection is treated with an antibiotic selected for expected susceptibility or, preferably, culture results. Doxycycline is commonly effective, although the veterinarian chooses the drug based on the individual case and local resistance considerations.
Cats that are dehydrated or not eating need fluid and nutritional support. Pneumonia can require hospitalisation, oxygen and more intensive monitoring. Nebulisation or coupage may be recommended in selected lower respiratory cases to help mobilise secretions.
In group environments, affected cats should be separated where practical, and bowls, bedding and hands should be cleaned to reduce transmission. Overcrowding and poor ventilation increase respiratory disease pressure and need to be addressed alongside medication.
A vaccine is available in some regions for cats at increased risk in high-density housing, but it is not routinely required for every pet cat. Kittens with pneumonia have a more guarded course and should be monitored closely until breathing, appetite and temperature are normal.
Treatment response should be reassessed if cough or fever persists, because resistant bacteria, pneumonia or a concurrent viral infection may require a different plan.
