A concise guide to the condition’s pattern, detection, management and urgency.
This snapshot is a general guide, not a diagnosis or treatment plan. New, severe or worsening signs require veterinary assessment.
Cat bite wounds are punctures caused by teeth penetrating the skin, most often during fights. The surface holes can be tiny and close quickly, trapping bacteria deep in the tissues. An abscess may then form over several days as infection and inflammatory fluid accumulate.
Common sites include the head, shoulders, limbs and tail base. Early signs may be subtle: the cat becomes quiet, hides, eats less or resents being touched. As infection develops, a warm painful swelling may appear, sometimes followed by sudden rupture and foul-smelling discharge. Bites over joints, the chest or abdomen can cause deeper complications than a simple skin abscess.
Outdoor access, territorial conflict and intact male behaviour increase the risk of fighting. Bite wounds are also an important route of feline immunodeficiency virus transmission, and exposure to feline leukaemia virus may be relevant depending on circumstances.
Clipping the coat can reveal punctures hidden beneath fur. A veterinarian assesses whether infection is localised or whether deeper structures are involved. Fever, dehydration and systemic illness can accompany a large abscess.
A ruptured abscess can look dramatic but may actually be less painful once pressure is released. Even so, the cavity can contain dead tissue and need proper drainage. Small bite holes should therefore not be dismissed simply because they are difficult to see or appear to have sealed.
An abscess is therefore a delayed consequence of a wound that may have looked insignificant on the day of the fight. The small puncture can disappear beneath the coat while bacterial infection expands under the skin. This explains why a cat may seem normal after a fight and become feverish or painful days later.
Early treatment of a fresh bite may prevent a large abscess, while waiting until the cat stops eating or develops fever usually means more extensive care is needed.
Cats returning home after a fight should be checked carefully for small punctures, tenderness, limping or areas where the coat is damp or matted. Running the hands gently over the body can reveal pain or swelling before a large abscess develops.
Over the next several days, reduced appetite, fever, hiding, reluctance to jump or sudden aggression when one area is touched can indicate infection. Bite wounds near an eye, joint, chest or abdomen deserve prompt assessment because deeper damage may not be visible externally.
The veterinarian may clip the fur to locate punctures and determine whether a pocket of infection has formed. Blood tests are used in systemically unwell cats. Imaging is considered when penetration into a body cavity, joint or bone is possible. Culture is reserved for selected cases.
Because bites can transmit FIV and FeLV, testing or repeat testing may be recommended according to the cat’s previous status and timing of exposure.
Diagnosis is usually based on history and examination. Culture is not required for every uncomplicated case but may be useful when infection is recurrent, severe or fails to respond.
A mature abscess is usually treated by opening and draining the infected cavity, removing dead material and flushing the area. Sedation or anaesthesia may be required because the tissues are painful. Some wounds are left open temporarily so infection can continue to drain rather than being sealed inside.
Pain relief is important. Antibiotics are prescribed when the location, severity or systemic signs justify them, and the full course should be given as directed. A simple superficial abscess may not need prolonged medication after adequate drainage, while deep or complicated bites require more intensive treatment.
At home, the cat is kept indoors and the wound monitored for renewed swelling, discharge or pain. Elizabethan collars may be needed to prevent licking. Fever, poor appetite or lethargy that persists after drainage warrants reassessment.
Prevention focuses on reducing fighting. Desexing, indoor living or secure outdoor enclosures can markedly reduce bite exposure. Cats with repeated outdoor fights should have FIV and FeLV risk reviewed. Prompt examination after a known fight is preferable to waiting for a sealed puncture to become a large abscess.
Deep wounds near joints or body cavities may need a drain, surgical exploration or longer antibiotic therapy than a routine superficial abscess.
