A concise guide to the condition’s pattern, detection, management and urgency.
This snapshot is a general guide, not a diagnosis or treatment plan. New, severe or worsening signs require veterinary assessment.
Crop stasis is delayed or absent emptying of the crop, a food-storage expansion of the oesophagus. “Sour crop” describes fermentation and secondary bacterial or yeast overgrowth within retained contents; it is a consequence, not a complete diagnosis. Hand-reared chicks are particularly vulnerable when formula temperature, concentration, volume or brooder heat is wrong.
Other causes include dehydration, systemic infection, hypothermia, crop burn, foreign material, obstruction farther down the gastrointestinal tract, heavy-metal toxicity and neurological motility disease. The crop remains full between feeds, becomes fluid- or gas-filled, develops a sour smell, or regurgitates. Chicks lose feeding response and weight, become dehydrated and may aspirate. Severe burns can necrose the crop wall and later form a fistula or stricture.
Emptying time varies with species, age, meal and formula, so one palpation must be interpreted against the feeding schedule. Candida on a sample may be secondary to stasis rather than the initiating problem. Simply adding antifungal medicine without correcting temperature, obstruction or sepsis invites recurrence.
Prognosis is good for early husbandry-related stasis and guarded with necrosis, aspiration pneumonia or severe systemic disease. Repeated squeezing, massage or force feeding can rupture the crop or cause aspiration. Prevention uses accurate formula mixing and temperature measurement, clean equipment, correct meal volume, a warm stable brooder and daily gram weights. Adult crop stasis warrants investigation for deeper gastrointestinal or systemic disease rather than being treated as a nursery error. Crop stasis means delayed emptying; “sour crop” describes fermentation and is not a single diagnosis. Formula temperature or consistency errors, chilling, obstruction, infection, toxin exposure and systemic illness can all slow motility. Retained contents stretch the crop, promote bacterial or yeast overgrowth and increase aspiration risk. A distended crop may feel fluid-filled, doughy or gas-filled depending on its contents, but palpation alone cannot identify the primary cause.
Record species, age, last feeds, measured formula temperature and concentration, brooder temperature, volumes, emptying intervals, weight trend and any foreign object. Palpate crop size, wall, temperature, gas and fluid gently; examine hydration, oral cavity, abdomen and respiratory status.
Fresh crop aspirate is examined by Gram stain or cytology for bacteria, yeast and inflammation and cultured when indicated. Radiographs or contrast studies investigate foreign body, burn sequelae, proventricular dilation or distal obstruction. Blood glucose, complete blood count and chemistry assess sepsis and metabolic compromise.
Daily pre-feed weights and written crop-emptying times identify deterioration early. Dark skin, cold fluid contents, absent feeding response, regurgitation or breathing change requires urgent care. Recheck the underlying cause after the crop empties; disappearance of retained food does not prove that infection, burn or obstruction has resolved. The crop is assessed for volume, gas, wall injury and emptying interval. A small aspirate supports cytology, Gram stain and culture, while radiographs or contrast studies investigate foreign material or distal obstruction. In chicks, brooder temperature, feeding technique and exact formula preparation are reviewed.
Stabilise warmth, hydration, glucose and circulation. An overfilled static crop may be carefully emptied by an avian veterinarian while protecting the airway; owners should not invert or squeeze the bird. Feeding is paused or reduced only as directed, then restarted in smaller dilute or easily digested meals once motility and temperature improve.
Correct brooder heat, formula preparation and volume. Treat bacterial or Candida overgrowth according to cytology and culture, recognising that antimicrobials do not restore motility by themselves. Prokinetic drugs are used only after mechanical obstruction is excluded. Foreign bodies, strictures, fistulas or necrotic crop burns may require endoscopy or surgery. Aspiration pneumonia receives respiratory support and separate treatment.
Weigh at least daily and document each meal and emptying interval. All feeding equipment is cleaned and dried between chicks and leftover formula discarded. Transition back to normal concentration gradually. Persistent stasis prompts reassessment for PDD, Macrorhabdus, heavy metal, systemic infection or distal obstruction. Prognosis worsens with crop-wall death, recurrent aspiration or an uncorrectable motility disorder. Further feeding is withheld until obstruction and aspiration risk are assessed, but prolonged fasting is avoided once stability returns. A veterinarian may empty or lavage the crop with airway protection, then provide warmed fluids and treat identified yeast or bacteria. Underlying temperature, formula, motility or systemic problems must be corrected.
