Homemade bird treats

Just like us humans, birds need a balanced diet to keep them happy and healthy. But everyone deserves a treat some times. Treats are a great way of enticing your bird to learn new tricks or rewarding them for good behavior. Here is a list of tasty treats you can easily make at home.

Peanut Butter Cheerio Necklace

Remember those sweet necklaces you would put around your neck as a child and eat? Well this is the bird version. Feed cheerios on to a string then tie each side together to create a Cheerio necklace. Lightly coat the necklace in organic, low salt peanut butter then dip into seeds. This makes a great snack for your bird and can be easily hung or tied to the cage.

Fruit Platter

Fruits such as oranges, bananas, berries and melon are particularly healthy for your bird, providing them with the necessary vitamins. Chop the fruit up into small pieces and mix up before feeding to the bird. Some fruits are toxic to birds so if you are unsure which to use, do some research first or ask your vet.

Oat Cookies

Treat your bird to a cookie or two. Crack an egg into one cup of dry oats. Then add a few table spoons of honey. You can add dried fruit and chillies as an extra if you wish. Chillies are especially liked by birds as they do not feel the heat like we do. Mix the ingredients well then spread onto baking paper and bake for around 10 minutes. Cut up into tiny pieces before feeding it to your bird.

Seeded Breakfast Omelet

Start your bird’s day off nicely with a home cooked omelet. Mix bird friendly seeds with two eggs. Boil the mixture in a bag until cooked right through. Cooking for 15 minutes will ensure the egg is fully cooked. Then serve up!
